Directions
From the Ports
From any of these ports head to Le Mans and then take the A28 to Tours or the A11 towards Angers.
From the A 28 take the A10 to Chatellerault and Poitiers and then follow directions given below for directions from the airport.
From the A11 do not go as far as Angers but take the A85 to Tours and follow directions given below for directions from Angers airport.
From Tours
From the airport turn left at the roundabout, go straight over at next two and then left as signed for A10 (the peage) to Poitiers and Chatellerault. Follow the A10 to exit 25 at Ste Maure de Touraine to Richelieu. Soon after leaving the A10 there is a village, Noyant de Touraine and from there take the D58 to Richelieu.
In Richelieu follow directions to Chatellerault, Lencloitre and Jaulnay. On leaving Richelieu, take the D749 to Chatellerault, which is straight across at the roundabout. Soon after going over the roundabout, as the round bends sharply to the left, there is a turning right to Monts s/ Guesnes on the (D22 then D46); follow the this all the way to the village.
On entering Monts sur Guesnes, at the junction/crossroads go straight ahead. This street is fairly narrow but then widens out. Immediately after the houses, turn left at the crossroads signed Coussay and Saires (D69). After going round three or so bends there are crossroads with a distinctive red brick house/hunting lodge called Le Pavillion Rouge. Turn left here, the D68 to Saires. After 0.3 km there is a lane to the right with house signs for La Beuille and Pincevent. Turn here and le retreat can be seen on the left.
From Angers
The airport is just off the A11. On leaving the airport head south to Angers but do not go as far as Angers. Leave the A11 and take the A85 to Tours. Take exit 3 to Saumur and on leaving the peage follow signs to Poitiers and Montreuil-Bellay. The route number is N147 or N347 (both seem to be used).
Stay on this road until reaching Loudun and then follow signs for Poitiers, still on the N147. Just under 3 km after leaving Angliers there are crossroads, turn left here (D46) for Guesnes and Monts s/ Guesnes. Go through Guesnes and carry on towards Monts s/ Guesnes.
Before reaching Monts s/Guesnes turn right on the D68 to Saires, this is more a lane than a road. At the T junction (which may have a sign for crossroads) turn left and then immediately right which is the D68 continued; this road has a house on the left and a former railway station on the right and then a big grain silo just after it.
At the next T junction turn right and then round two or three bends until reaching crossroads with a distinctive red brick house called Le Pavillion Rouge. Turn left here, the D68 to Saires. After 0.3 km there is a lane to the right with house signs for La Beuille and Pincevent. Turn here and le retreat can be seen on the left.
A more scenic route from Saumur is to take the N152 which follows the north bank of the Loire or the D947 which follows the south bank of the Loire to Montsoreau. In Montsoreau follow the D947 to Fontevraud l’Abbaye and then Loudun. After Fontevraud this route might also be called the D147. In Loudun follow signs to Poitiers on the N147 and then carry on as above.
From Poitiers
On leaving the airport go round to the left at the roundabout. After traffic lights with a big Intermarche on the right get in the left lane to turn left at the next set of traffic lights. Go straight over at the first roundabout and at the next larger roundabout take the last exit which is signed the N147 to Angers and Saumur. The road forks near the top of the hill and it is the right side that is the north N147.
Go through Neuville de Poitou and on to Mirabeau. At the roundabout in Mirabeau continue on the road to Angers and Saumur but after a very short distance take a right fork D7 to Coussay. *
Go through Coussay and Brizay until reaching crossroads at Saires. Turn left here on the D68 to Monts s/ Guesnes, and follow this road for 2 km where there is a lane to the left with a sign for La Beuille and Pincevent. Le retreat is on the left.
* If you miss the D7 to Coussay turn go along the N147 a bit farther until reaching the D24 to Verrue and Monts s/ Guesnes. After Verrue and then Saint Vincent and before entering Monts-s/Guesnes take a right turn on the D68 to Saires. This road has a house on the left and a former railway station on the right and then a big grain silo just after it.
